Silk, Wax and Dye

A while ago, I took a class on printing on fabrics. This piece was created by painting hot liquid wax on a white piece of silk. Wherever you see white, that's where the wax was applied.

After the wax dried, I used dye to paint color into the areas created by the wax.

After the dye dried, I sandwiched the silk between paper towels and ironed it with a very hot iron. The wax melted and was absorbed into the paper towels which left the silk soft with intense colors.

This technique is similar to batik but instead of masking out areas with wax and dipping the whole piece of fabric into dye which is true batik, I used a more painterly approach. It was like a watercolor painting using silk, wax resist and dye. A fun experiment!

Glasses Transformed

So I have a pair of Coach glasses that have a really dark frame and even though I know that's the style I just thought they were too dark for me. In fact I remember having a pair of glasses like them in 7th grade which I hated. That's why I got contact lenses when I was 15. And that's why I only wear my glasses at night or when my contacts bother me. Since I didn't like the new Coach glasses, I kept wearing my old wire rims - really? Ugh. Then one day I thought, "Since I never wear them anyway and I was about to donate them, why don't I paint them?" So I did. With acrylic paint. Animal print. Light coating of Mod Podge. Now I love them and wear them all the time.

More Watermelon Delights

Watercolor watermelons sitting on a watermelon rug next to a paper mache watermelon bowl.

I covered half of a balloon with paper mache, added a pedestal foot and finished with colored tissue and watercolor seeds.

Refreshing!

Summer Watermelon

There's something about watermelon as an image. I love the shape and color combination - that wonderful pink separated from the dark green with bright white and the black seeds are just the right accent.

I used my favorite Model Magic clay to make these watermelon inspired pots holding a little stitched watermelon pillow.

 Summer delights.
